| Title: |
Woman in the Moon
Bracelet |
| Artist: |
Denise and Samuel Wallace |
| Size: |
This bracelet was made to
fit an average woman's wrist (about 7") and can be adjusted. The band is
15/16" at it's widest point; the large, center bezel is 1
½" across. |
| Description: |
Circa 1990. This bracelet is
20 years old and as good as new - not a scratch or mark anywhere.
Comfortable to wear it is bold enough to make a statement, with a
separate Fossil Ivory face and bezel on each side and an intriguing
Sterling Silver Mask that opens to reveal a hidden face in the center. From Denise: "This
design comes from a mask carved by both Eskimo and Athabascan natives.
The idea of the woman in the moon reminds us of our sister who became
the moon. The designs on the cheeks or chins were
added by our neighbors, the Athabascans. We have included these designs
in our work. This design is one of the pieces I have worked with for
some time. The first "Woman in the Moon" reminded me of my grandmother.
As a result, I think of her through the design." On
the inside of the band:

|
Name:
UNDER THE SEA
Belt
Date: Summer, 2008
What's notable about this piece: This was designed and created
by Dawn Wallace-Gadd, with all the lapidary work done by her brother,
David Wallace. It is a complicated, complex piece that is, in fact,
thirty-one separate pieces of jewelry!
|

|
|

|
Name:
King Island Dancer Belt
Date: 1989
What's notable about this piece: Always in a private,
professionally-curated collection, this belt remains brand-new (after twenty
years). It has been featured in advertising, used as an illustration for
cultural anthropology and was a key part of the museum exhibit "Arctic
Transformation: The Jewelry of Denise and Samuel Wallace." |

|
|

|
Name:
Seal Hunting Belt
Date: 1986
What's notable about this piece: This belt was created in the period
just after Denise and Wally began exploring the new idea of using a belt as
a collection of separate pieces depicting Native Alaskan Life - it is an
explosion of artistic creativity, and with all these new ideas fleshed out it
is perhaps the most appealing belt to many of Denise's admirers. |

|
|

|
Name: Originally
”Alaska, The Land and Spirit of
My People”, we now often refer to this famous piece as
the Spirit of Alaska Belt"
Date: November, 1984
What's notable about this piece: This is
"The Missing Link" in
the story of Denise
Wallace Jewelry. Secreted away by the private owner since new in late
1984, this is belt is the bridge between the Wallace's early use of
geometric designs and their subsequent decision to depict Denise's
Alaskan heritage in their jewelry. There is only one other belt with
work on two sides of each segment. |
