Name: Killer Whale/ Wolf Transformation Bracelet #115/200
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size:  8½" long.
Comments: The longer of the two examples of this design we have, this is a vintage piece from just a few years ago, number 115 in this series. In this bracelet, it's the central face that is the Wolf/Killer Whale, and the fastener is a "toggle", which some prefer as it can be easy to manipulate.

From Denise: This bracelet represents the Killer Whale and Wolf Transformation story. A friend’s uncle had seen Killer Whales who transformed themselves into wolves and crawled on the land. Killer Whales and wolves have similar lifestyles; they live and hunt in family pods or packs, staying together fro extended periods of time, and they mate for life. They both have a hierarchical system with the family.

Title: Sea Otter Pin/Pendant #2/5
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size: 3" X 1¼"
Description: Denise first designed this Sea Otter Mother and Baby shortly after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.  The spill occurred in the Prince William Sound where Denise's family lives and her siblings and extended family were directly affected by the tragedy and participated in efforts to save the otters that were contaminated with oil.    The human form on the body of the mother otter reminds us that we're all connected and that what we do to the animals and the environment also affects the people.  The simple form flows as if you can feel the otter floating on the water while you wear it.
Materials: Sterling Silver, 14k Gold, Fossil Walrus Ivory, Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli

Title: Double Seal Pendant #3/5
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size: 4" tall; 2.5" wide; Fish earrings are 1.5" tall
Description: Denise Wallace always likes to create designs that have historical precedents - there is a "Two Seals" design found in ancient artifacts from Alaska. This wonderful pendant depicts a pair of seals and their main food - the fish of the cold ocean. In this case, the fish are Halibut. Each of the seals has a flatfish built into it's body - these fish are actually separate pieces of jewelry that can be removed and worn as earrings.
Denise has added her own seal/fish story to this design which makes it even more wonderful:
Several years ago, Denise was with members of her family, fishing for Halibut in the cold waters near Cordova, Alaska. Denise hooked a big one, and was hauling it in when a seal grabbed it from her hook, stealing her catch. This moment of frustration is captured in this piece—note the sad face between the two seals, and their bellies full of flatfish (Halibut).  These two fish can be liberated by wearing them as earrings!
Materials: Sterling Silver, 14K Gold, 18K Gold, Fossil Walrus Ivory

Title: Ivory Face Cufflinks (with Lapis)
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size: Faces are 7/8" X 1/2" and 13/16" X 9/16"
Desciption: Based on the earring design of the same name, these are truly interesting cufflinks - be aware you'll get lots of questions!
From Denise: "Many people ask the reason for the facial expressions on the male and female faces. There seem to be many different stories behind this, but the one I am going to tell you comes from my friend Chuna McIntyre. This is a short version of the story:
"At one time there was a brother and a sister. The brother flew up to the sky and turned into the sun. His sister flew up crying, and turned into the moon. Hence, the reason for the upturned mouth on the male faces, and the downturned mouth on the female faces.""
Materials: Sterling Silver, Fossil Walrus Ivory; Lapis Lazuli

Title: Hunter Cufflinks
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size: Bezel is 7/8" X 5/8"

Title: Woman in the Moon Ring
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size: This is the smaller of the two rings Denise made in this design; The outer bezel surrounding the face is 1.25" tall and this example is ring size 6 (it cannot be adjusted - call for more information).
Description: Circa 1990. In beautiful, seemingly never-worn condition.

From Denise: "This design comes from a mask carved by both Eskimo and Athabascan natives. The idea of the woman in the moon reminds us of our sister who became the moon. The designs on the cheeks or chins were added by our neighbors, the Athabascans. We have included these designs in our work. This design is one of the pieces I have worked with for some time. The first "Woman in the Moon" reminded me of my grandmother. As a result, I think of her through the design."

Materials: Sterling Silver, Fossil Walrus Ivory.

Name: UNDER THE SEA Belt
Date: Summer, 2008
What's notable about this piece: This was designed and created by Dawn Wallace-Gadd, with all the lapidary work done by her brother, David Wallace. It is a complicated, complex piece that is, in fact, thirty-one separate pieces of jewelry!

Name: King Island Dancer Belt
Date: 1989
What's notable about this piece:  Always in a private, professionally-curated collection, this belt remains brand-new (after twenty years). It has been featured in advertising, used as an illustration for cultural anthropology and was a key part of the museum exhibit "Arctic Transformation: The Jewelry of Denise and Samuel Wallace."

Name: Seal Hunting Belt
Date: 1986
What's notable about this piece: This belt was created in the period just after Denise and Wally began exploring the new idea of using a belt as a collection of separate pieces depicting Native Alaskan Life - it is an explosion of artistic creativity, and with all these new ideas fleshed out it is perhaps the most appealing belt to many of Denise's admirers.

Name: Originally Alaska, The Land and Spirit of My People, we now often refer to this famous piece as the Spirit of Alaska Belt"
Date: November, 1984
What's notable about this piece: This is "The Missing Link" in the story of Denise Wallace Jewelry. Secreted away by the private owner since new in late 1984, this is belt is the bridge between the Wallace's early use of geometric designs and their subsequent decision to depict Denise's Alaskan heritage in their jewelry. There is only one other belt with work on two sides of each segment.
