| At left is a photo that my father, Barney Turner, took
in Northern Greenland in 1948. It's one of many we have of his journey's
north as the First Mate of the Schooner Bowdoin (now the official
sailing vessel of the State of Maine). This proud mother shows off her
family (note the reticent husband in the background!). I put this here
to point out the idea of an Inuit woman "packing" her baby in the hood
of her Amauti ("woman's parka" ). The people of Taloyaok and
Holman have used this in their doll-making, and we offer some of their
wonderful creations below. |
