Endion's engine is the original Chrysler Marine Crown Special M47S. It's a Six-cylinder Flathead gas engine (Chrysler used the term "L-Head" for this design); Fresh-water cooled; Two Carburetors (updraft); 12 Volt (originally equipped with both an Alternator and Generator - really!); 135 HP; 1:1 transmission.
April, 2005: I have now finished the machine work on the block. It was in need of a complete rebuild - the hour meter said 1500 hours, but it looks like that meter hasn't worked in a long time... Anyway, the engine was once stored full of water (in Northern Ontario), and the water pump was replaced, but no one took apart the water jacket/exhaust manifold - it ruptured, and water found its way into the exhaust valves (and into the cylinders). Those valves are sodium-filled, and if they blow up, it's a bad day. We won't let that happen again! We saved the block, crankshaft, connecting rods and valves - and of course, we bored, honed, and ground those. Everything else in the block was replaced. I'll list all the details some other time.
The accessories are "in progress". I had a quote on rebuilding the two carbs for $2400.00 (!), but will do them myself for a lot less, including the cost of buying a few new tools. No wonder you can spend a quick $30K on one of these boats... I want to find an original style water pump (or a gear-driven OEM replacement made by Jabsco (their model #1390) instead of the cob-job in place now. Also, the alternator is a Delco piece of junk (it wasn't even lined up with the flywheel pulley - how was that supposed to work??), and the generator is unnecessary - I want to take it off permanently. I'll be looking for electronic ignition parts that will fit the old distributor, too.
