SEAL HUNTING BELT The Seal Hunting Belt was created in 1986. Unique among jewelry designers of the period, the Wallaces dedicated a huge amount of precious time to the creation of this piece. Drawing on images from the coast of Alaska and the cultures that have lived there since long before recorded history (especially artifacts from the Okvik or Old Bering Sea culture), Denise envisioned a typical hunting scene portrayed with the animals and humans all existing together. In her book, “Arctic Transformations: The Jewelry of Samuel and Denise Wallace”, author Lois Sherr Dubin relates the following anecdote: “The title explains this belt,” Denise Wallace said in 1987, “but I’ll try to give you a little insight. I had been thinking of doing a hunting scene in a belt design. Last year, when I was in Alaska, I saw sea otters in the bay outside of Cordova. Some were floating on their backs. Others were swimming. It struck me as a belt. Through my research, I had found carvings of seals in the same positions I had seen the sea otters. Since the seal is so important to Aleut and Eskimo life, I thought it best to use the seal. Individually, the seals on the belt carry symbolism relating to Aleut or Eskimo imagery. On several of them are designs taken from the skeletal patterns found on ivory bag fasteners, storytelling knives, bowls, and other fetishes. Some of the seals have doors that open to reveal a fish design, the seal’s main food source. In between the seals are three seal masks to show the importance of the seal in Eskimo ceremony. It was my way of tying it all together.” The Seal Hunting Belt is widely recognized as ‘the best of the best’ among the many fans of the Wallace’s jewelry. An award-winner when unveiled at Santa Fe Indian Market in 1986, it was photographed for the frontispiece of the book “Arctic Transformations: The Jewelry of Samuel and Denise Wallace” and was prominently featured in the book and the travelling museum exhibit of the same name. It is a one-of-a-kind piece, created by a one-of-a-kind team. The Seal Hunting Belt is made from Sterling Silver and a variety of semi-precious stones and ancient Fossilized Walrus Tusk Ivory. As a complete belt, it measures 38” long.
