Title: Sea Otter Pin/Pendant #2/5
Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace
Size: 3" X 1¼"
Description: Denise first designed this Sea Otter Mother and Baby shortly after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.  The spill occurred in the Prince William Sound where Denise's family lives and her siblings and extended family were directly affected by the tragedy and participated in efforts to save the otters that were contaminated with oil.    The human form on the body of the mother otter reminds us that we're all connected and that what we do to the animals and the environment also affects the people.  The simple form flows as if you can feel the otter floating on the water while you wear it.
Materials: Sterling Silver, 14k Gold, Fossil Walrus Ivory, Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli

Title: Transformation Earrings (VINTAGE)
Artist: Denise  Wallace
Size: Triangular Bezel: about 1 3/16" wide and 1" tall; Total length about 2 7/8"
Description: This pair of handmade earrings presage the cast upper elements ultimately used in the production style of this design (see current examples below). Denise made these in the late 80's.
The cutouts in the silver represent old ivory pictographs of a man and a seal. The ivory faces are a man on one earring and a seal on the other. The ability to transform ( which some gifted individuals were capable of) gave the people insight into the hunting manners of the animals--the seal being one of the most important for its meat, skins and oil. The ability to appease the animals is essential to successful hunting and the survival of the people.
Materials: Sterling Silver, Fossil Walrus Ivory.

Artist: Denise and Samuel Wallace

Description: From 1996. The design of this piece is Denise's interpretation of a traditional Seal Mask from the coastal Alaskan Native people. She made this piece as a very limited edition (of 200) as part of her gallery line. Of course, many look at this piece and see a turtle, and here's Denise's comment on it: "Most people think this design is a turtle.
