Five Piece Transformation/Shaman
Belt, Circa 1992 |
| Artist: |
Denise and Samuel Wallace |
| Size: |
The jewelry segments are about 3" X 10" total, and a one inch leather strap
goes around the back of the waist. |
| Description: |
From 1992. A rare item from the early 90's, and an honor for us
to offer for sale, this
item is a customized selection of five elements from a full-body belt the
Wallace completed in 1988 - that original belt is now in the collection
of the Mingei International Museum in San Diego. As described by Lois
Sherr Dubin in her book Arctic Transformations: The Jewelry of Denise
and Samuel Wallace, "Each shaman has four (simultaneous) components:
animal-shaman, mask, animal transformed, and animal etching." As you can
see by the many photos we've included here
(link), this belt can be worn as a
single piece, or disassembled to become a whole collection of jewelry
pieces. It is worn on a leather belt and can be adjusted to fit any
waist size. A custom-made shadow box frame is included so that the
belt can be displayed as a static art piece. |
| Materials: |
Sterling Silver, 14k Gold, Fossil Walrus Ivory, Lapis and
Chrysacholla (on Walrus Shaman) and Sugilite and Chrysacholla (on Bird
Shaman). |
